PRINT. Grows

Take a look at the new tool for our rooftop garden.

Last month we welcomed a new growing tool to our rooftop garden at PRINT. and The Press Lounge — aeroponic grow towers, which we will be using this summer in addition to our raised beds and grow walls. We are using the Tower Garden system, which was discovered at the TedX Manhattan conference, where we learned that Green Bronx Machine is using them in their program with great success. The towers are aeroponic and are designed for vertical growth, making them perfect for growing in our compact rooftop environment. Aeroponics is the process of growing plants in an air or mist environment without the use of soil.

Now that the towers are installed we are growing rosemary, thyme, oregano, purple basil, bush basil, genovese basil, Thai basil, nasturtiums, kale, swiss chard, and arugula. We are a hoping for a great yield this summer. Another cool thing about using the towers is that they can be used year-round. When the weather turns chilly this fall, we are hoping to move the towers indoors in the winter and continue growing herbs, edible flowers and greens year-round.

Here are some photos of the construction, early planting, and full bloom plants ready for harvest today!
